Theory (especially the memorization of moves) is not important below the 2000 rating level. What's more important is knowing the motifs, themes or ideas in your opening. To become familiar with these middlegame ideas I recommed for you to go over the illustrative games in your chess book. I find the illustrative games and comments given by the author, Richard Palliser to be extremely instructive and very thorough.
The game below illustrates what can occur when your opponent is ignorant of the ideas behind your opening.
The Colle-Zukertort is a great opeing to play. I recommend it, if it suits your style of course.
