This is the first game between Vela and Juan. Vela played 1. e4 probably expecting to face either the Caro-Kann or the Sicilian Kan. Juan decides to allow transposition to the French Defence, possily avoiding any preparation by his opponent in the Advance Variation of the Caro-Kann. Juan's French Defence looked a little rusty and Vela obtained a nice edge--the kind of position most White players would like to have against the French. But later on move 16 Vela missed a nice continuation which would give him a nice game with some initiative. After that the position remained equal for some tim. Then Black opened the g-file with threats mounting against White's king. White slipped in a position where he could have maintained equality. Then White's position gradually turned for the worse and Juan won the endgame.
Nice play by both players. If Vela didn't miss the opportunity on move 16 then this could very well have been his game. I don't think we'll see Juan repeat this opening experiment again.
Good game!
I have two versions: First, annotations by me and some long Houdini analysis.
Next, only Houdini analysis with no comments by me.
What will happen in their next encounter?
