Is the Internet Chess Club Overpriced?

Once again the Internet Chess Club (ICC) has increased their subscription. I believe the rate is approximately 69.95 for a yearly membership. It seems like only a few years ago when the price was around $30.00 or so.

Sure, ICC is a good place to play chess and it offers many benefits. However, I think the best protest is to simply not pay this higher price. If enough people do follow suite then maybe ICC will get the point. I think it was a poor business decision for ICC to make especially in this tough economic time. In fact ICC should have been looking for ways to keep the cost the same even at the expense of dropping some services.

So, I decided not to renew and to take up my chess elsewhere, possibly at chess.com.

I feel this price increase (second in three years if I remember correctly) was pure insanity and a slap in the face to loyal members.

What do you think?

cheers

Paul

  1. I'm pretty bias because I don't like the ICC. When I was with them they took all my pending games and awarded them losses totally out of spite, even the one's where my opponent abandoned the game with a lone king! When I complained the owner sided with the disgruntled employee and I have had nothing to do with them ever since. I hope everyone boycotts them and they go out of business.

  2. I can relate. They once censored me for a week because I responded in kind to an insult. I hope they go out of business also. They must be trying to make a fortune with those dues.
