Just the other night at the chess club, I listened to a few people talk about Right to Work in Nevada. It seems I hear a lot of the casino workers are are really taken advantage of. I talked with a friend who works as a Porter in the Tropicana and he says if he gets only three small writeups then he is fired.
I really thought we progressed in this country since the 1960s--evidently not!
I know very little about the Right to Work laws, but I'm thinking it should be called Right to Fire instead.
Here's a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. "In our glorious fight for civil rights, we must guard against being fooled by false slogans as 'right to work.' It provides no 'rights' and no 'works.' Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective barganing... We demand this fraud be stopped.
Some might say that Right to Work laws benefit the state. If I recall history, slavery benefits the state also, but is slavery moral?
It seems to me the plantations of the Old South are now the casinos in Nevada.
In my opinion, this just seems like a new modern form of slavery. We can have economic growth and still do the right thing. People who are treated right are more motivated and more productive.
Only when the people wake up and realize they have the true power will this stop. However, in this downturn of the economy I think abuses like this will continue.
cheers
Paul
