Shortly before the tournament last night I gave Gerald Shapiro my best, "Win it for the Gipper" speech. I'm not sure if he heard me because he tilted his head towards me and didn't seem to hear me very well. He asked me to repeat it and I said, "Mr Shapiro, I'm just going to put a 'W' next to your name tonight. I can feel you have the mojo." I was just having fun.
However when the pairings was announced, Mr. Shapiro was paired against Richard Lee, the reigning high school state champion.
Towards the end of the tounament I walked over to the board. Mr. Shapiro had two dangerous passed pawns. Lee made an error and lost.
A nice effort indeed! Unfortunately I don't have the game to post.
Congratulations Mr Shapiro!. You had the mojo last night.
Uhm...maybe there is something to the power of positive thinking.
Cheers
Paul

There are two rules at chess club. Rule number one: You do NOT take Gerald Shapiro to an endgame! Rule number two: You do NOT take Gerald Shapiro to an endgame! Shapiro is an excellent endgame player which Richard Lee learned the hard way. If you're playing Shapiro and the queens leave the board, your king will soon be joining them.
ReplyDeleteIt was certainly instructive to watch.
