The score is 4 to 2 in favor of Vela.
Vela has White and plays for the win. A win here by White could be a great psychological victory.
Many players would "loose their heart" and fold. If Jose was a typical chess player the match would be over by now. However, Jose is not your regular chess player. My guess is life on Cuba has "molded his heart into steel." He will not be disheartened by a loss and will find the desire to fight back even harder. Should I also mention he is not one to compromise his principles as he left everything behind in Cuba to come to America. No compromise in life and no compromise on the chess board -- all or nothing!
Life is hard in Cuba, harder than most of us Americans could ever imagine. In Cuba, quitting is not an option. Most of the people on the island make an average of only $20.00 a week. So, as you can see, quitting is not an option there. Quitting could mean no food for the week or perhaps death.
Let's not forget that Vela also has an iron-will and is playing the best chess I've seen him play. His play has matured from a positonal player to a more universal style. Now he will be a difficult opponent for anyone in the club!
The match now stands at 5 to 2 in favor of Vela. I would have to say the match is almost over now, unless Jose puts forth a heroic effort.
