Monday Night Blitz, February 14, 2011

We had 14 players show up for last night's blitz tournament. We played 5 min double rounds for six rounds.

Several new people showed up:

Scott Herbert with sons Clayton and Claude.
Koorosh Forutan from Iran came in heading up the pro-Chess movement. Shortly after establishing democracy he departed after round 2, but he'll be back in the future.
Bryan Morris: A GIANT of a player from Sackramento (Sacramento).
Kenny Moody: Came all the way from Atlanta, Georgia.

It was nice seeing all the new faces and I hope you return.

It was one of the strongest blitz tournaments that I've witnessed at least from a competitive point of view. The result was decided in the final round!

First, let me commend a few players for their excellent performance. Quint is showing that he is a force to be reckoned with. Fredenburgh is always at the top of the blitz boards. He's an excellent player and a threat to win every blitz tournament. Next, there's Larry Ancheta who just recently returned from Central America. He played like a speed demon. I didn't know it was humanly possible to play that fast. Not only was he fast, but his play was strong and accurate...very impressive! Quint, Fredenburgh and Ancheta played great, but the surprise performance of the evening belongs to Royce Pereira. He tore through the field with impressive play, leaving behind a field or torched pieces. I have a feeling it won't be a surprise any longer as the top players will have to look over their shoulder for Royce. The sky is the limit for Royce. It all depends on how high he wants to fly! Kenny Moody and McVoy also had notable performances, especially considering the competition. McVoy is probably getting rid of a little "ring rust" and I expect him to return to from soon and finish in the top three again.

Here's the results:

1. Quint 9.0
2. Fredenburgh 8.5
3. Ancheta 8.0
4. Pereira, R. 8.0
5. McVoy 7.5
6. Moody, K. 7.0
7. Morris, Joel 7.0
8. Herbert S., 6.0
9. Thurber M. 6.0
10. Burns D. 5.0
11. Morris B. 5.0
12. Herbert, Claude 3.0
13. Herbert, Clayton 3.0
14. Forutan, Koorosh 1.0

Thanks for coming!
