Twelve participants played in Monday's five round (double round) 5 min blitz tournament. We witnessed the crowning of "The Duke of Earl" Salazar to King. His recent results has earned him the title of King and the best blitz player in the club.
In a three-way tie for second place were three princes vying for the throne: Jauregui J., Phillips R. and Reyes, V. If you ask me I would say these guys are planning a coup.
In third place was a tie between Quint and Trivett. Quint and Trivett had a very tough and somewhat controversial battle between each other. In game one of their match it went down to the wire. With almost no time left on both clocks, Jon quickly made an illegal move and pressed his clock. Quint's clock went to 0:00 and Jon called the flag. My ruling was that the game went to Jon since Quint didn't notice or call Jon's illegal move. NOTE: If an illegal move is called the precedence would go to the person calling the illegal move, provided his dropped flag isn't called first by the opponent. Blitz can be crazy and I can tell you it's easy for a TD to make a bad call. We're human. I think that I got this call right.
In fourth place was Dennis Hill who was lost and now is found. Mr Hill was wondering in "chess wilderness" for 27 years! We brought this lost lamb back and he is now saved! Thank God! Wait just a second Mr. Hill, I'd like to remind you that Salvation isn't free. I'll be waiting on your check which can be mailed to Chess Ministry, P.O. Box Hoax Avenue, Bodunk, MO 66666-6666. Don't be cheap, God doesn't like cheapskates!
In fifth place was Dan Burns and Zhitny Vladislav (AKA as Vlad the Impaler). In game one I handed Vlad a stake and told him to slay his opponent, V.Reyes, which is no easy task since Reyes is one of the top blitz players in the club. It's amazing what a little confidence and (possibly oversight by your opponent) can do. Vlad won the game! I was shocked when I saw the position on the board.
In sixth place was Karl "Blitzkreig" Ulbrich, followed by a tie at seventh place between Mendez and Salazar, M.
